Turning the division into a fraction

The line in a fraction is a division sign. So 3 divided by 4 is 3/4, and nothing has to be worked out at all. A whole number becomes a fraction by putting 1 underneath it: 5 is 5/1. That one move is what makes the next step possible.

Dividing by a fraction: flip and multiply

To work out 3/4 divided by 2/5, turn the second fraction upside down and multiply instead: 3/4 × 5/2. Use the boxes above twice. Tops first, 3 × 5 = 15. Then bottoms, 4 × 2 = 8. The answer is 15/8, or 1 and 7/8.

Divided into is the other way round

This is where most wrong answers come from. 8 divided into 24 means 24 divided by 8, which is 3. Divided by keeps the order you read; divided into reverses it. If a question uses the word into and your answer came out smaller than 1 when it should not have, this is why.

Checking what you got

Multiply back. Put your answer and the number you divided by into the boxes. If the result is the number you started with, the division was right.
Reduce at the end. Divide top and bottom by the same number until nothing goes into both.
Top heavier than the bottom is fine. 15/8 is a real answer; convert it to a mixed number only if you were asked to.
