Why there is no 1 to 1000 grid on this page

A grid of every pair from 1 to 1000 holds a million cells. At a size anyone could read it would cover a wall, no sheet of paper takes it and no screen shows it, so this page does not pretend to deliver one. Pick a range instead. Use the 12 x 12 grid above for the facts everything else is built from, print larger charts in blocks of rows — 1 to 30, then 31 to 60 — or list the multiples of the single number you care about as far as 1000. The splitting method below reaches any product under 1000 from the small grid, which is what the query usually wants.

What people mean by a 1-1000 chart

Two different things, and they need two different answers. Some want products up to 1000, which a small grid plus one trick covers. Others want the multiples of a single number listed as far as 1000, which is a list, not a grid.

Getting any product under 1000 from the grid

Split the bigger number into tens and units, multiply each part, then add. 23 x 34 becomes (20 x 34) + (3 x 34), which is 680 + 102 = 782. Every part of that is on the grid above once you strip the zeros off.

Moving the zeros

Multiplying by 10 adds one zero, by 100 adds two, by 1000 adds three. So 7 x 800 is 7 x 8 with two zeros put back: 5600. This is the whole reason a 12 x 12 grid is enough for numbers far past 1000.

When the answer looks wrong

Count the zeros again. Dropping one turns 5600 into 560 and the mistake is invisible unless you estimate first. Round both numbers, multiply the rounded pair in your head, and check your answer is the same size.
