Turning the chart into a worksheet
- Print this page. The grid is real text, so it prints at whatever size the paper allows and stays sharp.
- Print the blank grid and fill it in without looking.
- Lay the two sheets side by side and ring every square that does not match.
- Redo only the ringed rows the next day. A whole sheet redone from the start mostly repractises the facts that were already safe.
What is actually left to learn
The grid holds 144 squares but far fewer facts. Each answer appears twice, once above the diagonal and once below, because 7 x 8 = 56 and 8 x 7 = 56 are the same fact written the other way round. Cross off the 1, 2, 5 and 10 rows as well and the hard part shrinks to the sixes, sevens, eights and nines meeting each other.
The mistake to check for
Nearly every wrong answer on a filled-in grid is a slipped row or column rather than a fact the writer never knew. The test is the step size: along any row the answers go up by the row number, so if 6 x 7 = 42 then the next square must be 6 x 8 = 48. A jump that is not the row number means the eye has drifted a line, and the squares after it will all be wrong by the same amount.
Printing
Use landscape. If the right-hand columns still fall off the sheet, set the print dialogue to fit the page or lower the scale to about 80 per cent, and switch off background graphics so the lines come out plain black for copying.
