How to read it off the grid

Find 5 along the top, then run your finger down. Or find 5 down the side and run across. Both give the same answers, because 5 x 8 and 8 x 5 are the same product. That one fact halves how much there is to learn.

The check that never fails

Every multiple of 5 ends in 5 or 0. Odd number times 5 ends in 5. Even number times 5 ends in 0. If you write down 5 x 7 = 34, the last digit alone tells you it is wrong before you check anything else.

The halving shortcut

Multiply by 10, then halve. 5 x 14 becomes 140 halved, which is 70. This works for any number, not just the twelve rows on the grid, so it is worth more than memorising the table.

When the answer looks wrong

Two slips account for most of them. Reading the wrong row because the finger drifted a line, and confusing 5 x 6 = 30 with 6 x 6 = 36. Say the whole sentence out loud rather than just the answer; the mistake usually shows up in your own voice.
