How to read the grid

Find the first number along the top row. Find the second in the left column. Follow the row across and the column down until they meet. The number in that square is the answer.

Order never changes the result. 7 × 8 sits in a different square from 8 × 7, but both say 56. Showing that once halves the number of facts left to learn.

The patterns that do most of the work

  • × 1 the number stays as it is.
  • × 2 double it. 2 × 9 is just 9 + 9.
  • × 5 the answers end 5, 0, 5, 0 all the way down.
  • × 9 from 9 × 1 to 9 × 10, the two digits of the answer add up to 9. 9 × 7 = 63, and 6 + 3 = 9.
  • × 10 write the number, add a zero.
  • × 11 up to 9, repeat the digit. 11 × 4 = 44.

Strip those out and only a handful of stubborn facts are left in the middle of the grid: 6 × 7, 6 × 8, 7 × 8, 7 × 9 and 8 × 9. Most children who say they cannot do their tables are stuck on those five.

When the answer looks wrong

Nearly every mistake with a chart is a slipped line: the finger drifts one row up or one column across. Keep a ruler or a folded sheet of paper under the row you are reading.

Check a doubtful square against its neighbour. If 7 × 8 is 56, then 7 × 9 must be seven more, 63. A square that breaks that step is a square you read wrong.
