The shortcut: ten and three
Thirteen is ten plus three, and multiplication splits the same way. To get 13 × 7, work out 10 × 7 = 70, then 3 × 7 = 21, then add them for 91. Every answer in the table above can be reached like this, and past 13 × 6 it is faster than reciting.
Where people slip
The errors cluster on 13 × 7, 13 × 8 and 13 × 9, where the tens digit moves twice in a row. If you have written 13 × 8 = 114, split it instead: 80 + 24 = 104. The digit-sum trick you may know for the 3 and 9 tables does not work for 13, so use the split.
When the answer looks wrong
Three checks, in the order they are quickest:
- Neighbouring answers differ by exactly 13. If the gap between two rows is not 13, one of them is wrong.
- 13 times an even number is even, 13 times an odd number is odd.
- Divide the answer back by 13. A true answer from this table gives a whole number.
The tables around it
Most of this rests on the 1 to 12 times tables, which are worth having solid first. If you want the teens gathered in one place, use the 1 to 20 times table, and the multiplication charts hub lists the printable layouts.
