Two ways to get any answer without the table

Double it four times

16 is 2 x 2 x 2 x 2. So multiplying by 16 is doubling four times over. 7 doubles to 14, 28, 56, 112. That is 16 x 7, and you never had to remember it.

Split it into 10 and 6

16 x n is the same as (10 x n) + (6 x n). For 16 x 13: 130 plus 78 gives 208. Splitting is slower than doubling for small numbers but easier to do in writing, and it is the method that keeps working past 20.

When the answer looks wrong

The usual slip is 16 x 7. People reach for 102 or 106 because 16 x 6 = 96 is fresh in mind. It is 112. A quick size check helps too: 16 x n always lands between 15 x n and 20 x n, so 16 x 13 has to sit somewhere near 200, not near 100.
